Denver's 53-year-old zoning code is broken and needs to be fixed. It suffers from more than a half century of incremental changes that cumulatively have made it complicated, inconsistent and cumbersome. Denver needs a new zoning code that will support a growing economy, a sustainable environment, a diverse mix of housing, strong neighborhoods, and a high quality of life.

Fixing the Denver zoning code requires a deliberative, comprehensive, and inclusive process.  The New Code must respond to over 150 years of diverse development covering the city's more than 150 square miles.

In January of 2005, Mayor Hickenlooper appointed a community-based Zoning Code Task Force to guide and oversee this multi-year code effort. The 16-member Task Force is a diverse group comprised of volunteers drawn from neighborhood organizations, various business sectors, the historic preservation community, and the city's political leadership.

Since the beginning of the project, community involvement has been the cornerstone of the process and will continue to be as The New Zoning Code Draft is presented to the public for review and feedback.

The New Zoning Code is about creating clear regulations that build on the character of Denver's unique neighborhoods and articulate what Denver can become for the benefit of existing and new residents alike.

----------
During the summer and early fall, there will be numerous public meetings, in addition to those organized by WUCA and other Neighborhood Organizations to review the text and the map. The adoption of the new code and the new zoning map by City Council are expected sometime during 2010.
